I installed two 10TB Ironwolf drives, powered up the TS-253D, and downloaded and opened the QNAP Qfinder Pro utility. Setting up the TS-253D for the first time was straightforward in testing.
Other apps include a Malware Removal utility, a Multimedia Console app for managing multimedia content and transcoding video files, and a Storage and Snapshots app that takes you to a screen where you can create volumes and storage pools, manage external drives, and view disk utilization statistics.

The File Station icon takes you to a screen where you can upload and download files and configure Snapshots, a feature that records the state of a specific volume at a specific time and lets you restore the system to that date in the event of a data loss. While the QNAP app catalog offers plenty of choices, the Asustor catalog is almost three times the size, with more than 340 apps. The App Center offers 118 backup, business, entertainment, home automation, security, and surveillance apps that allow you to use the TS-253D as an iTunes or Plex server, an accounting and business management system, an IP camera surveillance station, and more. The Network and File Services section lets you manage network connections and set up FTP file sharing, and the Applications section is used to set up media, SQL, and RADIUS server applications, enable anti-virus settings, and create VPN connections.

The System menu lets you do things like manage storage space, update firmware, and configure security and power saving settings. Use the Privilege menu to create users and groups, manage permissions, and create shared folders. The Control Panel icon opens a screen with System, Privilege, Network and File Services, and Applications menus. As you download apps you can populate the desktop with icons, but it comes with a handful by default. It has colorful icons to help you configure storage-management settings, configure network settings, set up shared folders, and more. The TS-253D can be managed using a handful of mobile apps, but the QTS operating system provides everything you need to manage the NAS in a user-friendly web console. A single 70mm fan keeps internal components cool. As with the Asustor AS6602T, you can outfit it with solid-state M.2 NVMe drives for fast caching, but you’ll have to pay around $200 extra for an M.2 PCIe expansion card (the AS6602T has dedicated M.2 slots). The TS-253D-4G uses Intel’s HD Graphics 600 processor and supports hardware-accelerated video transcoding, and it has an open PCIe expansion slot. Power is provided by Intel’s 2GHz quad-core Celeron J4125 processor, 4GB of DDR4 RAM (which is expandable to 8GB), and 4GB of flash memory. Around back are dual 2.5GbE LAN ports that can be linked to provide 5GbE connectivity, a pair of USB 3.2 ports, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a reset button, and a power jack. They're joined by a power button, a USB 3.2 port, and a USB One-Touch Copy button. The front of the enclosure has LED indicators for system status, LAN activity, drive activity, and USB activity.
As with nearly all the NAS devices that we test, the TS-253D-4G doesn't come with drives, which means you’ll have to supply your own storage. The chassis is tool-free simply unlock the panel and slide it off to access the drives, which are attached to the sleds with snap-on brackets. Larger storage capacities can be achieved by connecting the NAS to a QNAP SATA or USB expansion port.įront-loading drive bays are hidden behind a black translucent panel. It supports single JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1, and supports a total capacity of 32TB using two 16TB drives. It’s a two-bay NAS that measures 6.6 by 4.1 by 8.9 inches (HWD) and can accommodate 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives. The TS-253D-4G uses the same basic chassis as the TS-251B-4G we reviewed in 2019, but this time around it sports a black and gray finish rather than a white and silver one. That said, our Editors’ Choice winner for two-bay NAS devices, the Asustor AS6602T, is a bit faster and offers a more extensive app catalog for just $30 more. Powered by a robust 2GHz Intel Celeron J4125 quad-core processor, the TS-253D turned in solid scores in our file transfer performance tests and offers a nice selection of apps. The QNAP TS-253D-4G ($369) is a two-bay NAS designed for business and home users who require a network attached storage device that brings high-speed connectivity and expandability.
